Reset your Closet Choices for the New Year Ahead

You don’t need to dump and refill your closets at the end of one year and the beginning of the next to keep up with current trends, but since it’s a time for reflection it’s the perfect moment to reflect on what’s there.

What do you actually wear? Are there gaps? How can you refresh your outfits to better align with who you are and what you love?

Know your goals

Decide what you want to accomplish before making any decisions.

Do you want to integrate more colors in general or just one or two of them? Are you trying your hand at creating a capsule (versatile, interchangeable pieces) wardrobe? Or there could be a trend coming down the runway you’re really psyched about and want in your rotation right now.

Know what you have

It’s time to go on a voyage of self-discovery through your closets, drawers, hampers and storage to know exactly what clothes you own and what you might be able to do with them.

Start with the things you wear the most often and think about why you gravitate toward them. If it’s simply out of habit then it’s time to tuck them further back in your closet and give your other garments a chance.

If it’s color, fit, comfort or how it makes you feel, take note. Then sort through the rest and find the ones that have some of the same traits you value, plus any that fill a particular niche you value, like a little black dress or classic blazer.

Know what you need

Once you have a new understanding of what’s in your closet and what your preferences are, be selective about what you buy from here on out.

You may find you need a new pair of jeans, a couple of tailored shirts or some new scarves or hats, but the best thing that can happen is finding novel ways to mix and match what you already have.
